About
Young Actors Workshop is an afterschool theater program where students create original plays and perform them for the community. In weekly classes, they use guided improvisation to create and star in original musical productions with imaginative story lines, unique characters, original dialogue, humor, and songs. The program includes two performances each year, one at HMB's annual Pumpkin Festival and a Spring show that is an original musical developed by the students during their weekly workshops.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
Young Actors Workshop was founded in 1990 with the objective to provide a positive environment in which children can develop theater skills and have opportunities for public performance. The program describes its approach as “Creative Programs by & for kids” and notes that kids create and star in original productions with imaginative story lines, unique characters, original dialogue, and humor. According to the program, it serves kids from K–12th grade in Half Moon Bay and Oakland, California.
Parent and alumni comments describe their experiences with the program. One parent, Pamela, says, “My favorite part about YAW is the children's creativity in developing their characters... my kids always love going and never complains.” Another parent, Shannon, says, “My favorite thing about YAW is that it’s child driven - giving the kids full expression of their true selves.” An adult alumnus, Zac, says, “Young Actors Workshop impacted my life by giving me an outlet to use my imagination and creativity.”
